This course is delivered over a 2-year period, delivered in 5-day blocks.  There are 11 blocks in total.  Training is face to face and includes practical and theory components. 

This course is suitable for tradespeople with rail signalling experience, such as electricians, signalling installers/certifiers, signal technicians, signal electricians and apprentices. If you have experience in rail signalling but no formal education, the Certificate IV in Rail Signalling can provide you with the skills and knowledge to further your career and job opportunities.

The course is only suitable for those currently working in the railway signalling maintenance environment. This course is appropriate for technicians or electricians who hold a current unrestricted electrical licence and/or have completed UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology - Electrician (or equivalent).

Topics covered include:

• Assembly and wiring of railway signalling equipment
• Installation, maintenance and testing of signalling cables
• Rail signalling power supply maintenance
• Train Detection equipment, including axle counters, audio frequency track circuits (Jointless), DC track circuits etc.
• Maintenance and testing of point machines
• Relay and computer based interlockings maintenance.
• Telemetry systems maintenance
• Level Crossing maintenance
• Maintenance and testing of track side equipment, signals and train protection equipment

We provide students with an understanding of and practice in fault finding techniques. Our training centre facilities include the simulation of many common rail signalling faults in a safe and controlled environment. At the end of railway signalling training with Competency Australia, signal electricians and technicians will understand the signalling system, not just individual components or equipment. Fault finding techniques employed will demonstrate this signal system understanding.

• Hands on activities in a simulated rail environment- we have facilities on site to wire up, install, maintain, set to work and fault find on real signalling equipment and systems.
• Workplace activities and assignments
• In-class theory, including workbook activities and written tests.

On successful completion of the course and associated assessment activities, you will be issued with the nationally recognised qualification UEE41223 - Certificate IV in Railway Signalling.
