Jeanette Aitken

Chief Executive/Director

Highly experienced in the areas of rail safety worker competence and management systems, Jeanette is also an engineer, trainer and assessor.  Jeanette maintains her engineering currency in the railway environment through activities such as locomotive compliance testing, electromagnetic compatibility testing and telecommunication systems design and installation. 

Compliance and continual improvement are fundamental to her business approach.

Michael Devere

Senior Signals Trainer

Michael has over 20 years of railway signalling experience both in Australia and overseas.  Since 2017, Michael has been working full time for Competency Australia, providing hands-on, equipment specific courses as well as developing and assessing the skills and knowledge of Certificate IV in Electrical - Rail Signalling apprentices and trainees. 

Michael is dedicated to providing the highest quality of signalling training to all his trainees, and is often called upon outside of hours to assist with fault finding and general signalling enquiries from his students.

Technical Manager/Trainer

John Aitken is an experienced communications engineer with a strong broadcasting, EMC and railway communications background. He has been involved in the majority of the railway radio communication systems that have been implemented in Australia in the last thirty years.  John was the principal author of the Central Queensland University railway telecommunications course. 

John develops and delivers technical training courses for Competency Australia in the areas of railway communications, safety and electromagnetic compatibility.

Rail Operations Trainer

Brett is an accomplished hands-on railway operations and safety manager. His proven record of achievement comprises in excess of 36 years experience in delivering operational and safety solutions to the railway industry.

Brett commenced his railway career in the role of Junior Station Assistant and progressed through a range of operational, management and senior executive management positions with the State Rail Authority of New South Wales, Rail Access Corporation and Rail Infrastructure Corporation before establishing his own consulting company, Terrace Rail Pty Limited, in 2004.

Signalling Trainer

Graham provides training in electrical signalling, including installation, maintenance, safeworking and testing. Graham holds Statements of Competency (SoC) for signal engineering work for multiple rail operators.

Graham has carried out a wide range of signalling works including commissioning management, inspection, testing and certification and project planning.

Stewart has been involved in just about every facet of railway signalling engineering works - starting as a maintenance technician and through training and experience, progressing to engineer and now manager.  

Stewart is currently employed in the role of Technical Principal - Rail Signalling at SMEC

Phil provides training, assessment, and subject matter expertise in signalling and telecommunication systems.  Phil is a highly experienced Senior Signal and Systems Engineer and educator.  He has over 20 years experience teaching, facilitating and tutoring across a range of subjects.  He has worked in numerous railway based installation, testing, commissioning, design, checking, verification and project management roles. 


Richard Stepniewski


Signalling Trainer

Richard has extensive experience in the railway signalling industry. He has a strong technical background in railway signalling, project engineering and systems engineering. Over the last 20 years, his main roles have been in management, and more recently training. Richard’s experience includes engineering management, project management, bid management and operations management roles.
