A lot has changed in the railway industry in the past 10 years. Introduction of new legislation, including the National Rail Safety Law (2012) has brought with it new and more rigorous requirements for rail operators and rail safety workers.
The Rail Industry Worker (Rail Safety Worker, Pegasus) card has been adopted by many operators and is now managed through the Australiasian Rail Association. So, once you have your Rail Industry Worker (RIW) card you can work on the rail, right? Well, not exactly. For any rail safety role there are specific requirements for competencies, training and assessment. For some roles, Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications are mandatory. For others, specific licences are required.
